Hey everyone!

Pope Letter and UNAIDS Donation

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Hey everyone! Just a quick update. We finally got our letter sent out to Pope. We ended up sending him a letter encouraging condom use as a way to prevent AIDS. We also put a few condoms in the package to let him try them out and see how they work for him. Here are the pictures:

Secondly, we went down and donated the $73.66 we made from the bake sale to fight AIDS worldwide. Thanks for everyone who made the bake sale a great success!

Weeks 3 and 4

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Last week we had a series of events involving the pope, HIV/AIDS, and baked goods.  You all know what that means!  During week 3 at our Atheist bake sale we raised over $70 for the UNAIDS programme.  We will be heading down to CHASE (formerly WAMU).
Here are some pictures of all the fun:

Secondly, during week 4 we had William Lobdell come and give a wonderful presentation on how he gradually lost his religion covering the LA Catholic sex scandal. Here are some clips from his book tour:

Lastly, we will NOT be a general meeting next week. This is because UCI is hosting the mythbusters and we are planning to be in attendance.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to thank all the AAR members for making this a memorable quarter. So now that it is week 10 and spring break is just right around the corner I wanted to do a quick recap of the quarter.

AAR Presents Donna C. Schuele on the Michael Newdow “under god” case

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Constitutional Law professor Donna Schuele will be joining us for a special meeting of AAR. We will be discussing the Michael Newdow “under god” case. In this case he argued that having “under god” in the pledge of allegiance was unconstitutional and asked for it to be removed. Professor Schuele was actually at the particular case and will be giving us a presentation on the case. We hope to see you all in attendance.

The lecture will be held on Thursday, Frebruary 26th from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at Humanities Hall room 262 at UC Irvine.

Vital Signs

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

At this weeks meeting (11/19) we will be taking part of the vital signs project.

The project is described on their website as follows:

We are on an expedition, a journey, a search for life. Socrates said: The unexamined life is not worth living. Dr. John and Dr. Drew want to examine life. As medical doctors, we examine our patient’s vital signs for a living. We want to explore together our own vital signs. Do we have a pulse? Do we have a blood pressure? Are we breathing? Do we have a temperature? Are we truly alive? I hope so…

We have discovered that to be truly alive; we also have to have another set of Vital Signs: Where did we come from (Origin)? Why are we here (Meaning)? Can we know right from wrong (Morality)? Where are we going (Destiny)?

vitalsigns.md is a place to talk, to listen, and to see who we are. This is a place to always feel welcomed no matter what your background, no matter what you believe because we are ALL in this life boat together. So come and join us or just listen in to our discussions along the journey. We want to know what people from all walks of life know about life.

So in short Dr. Drew and Dr. John will be attending our meeting and we will be answering a series of questions about our world view that they have prepared.

====================================================
Also as a final note we have had a few “preachers” on campus spreading the message of “Repent or go to Hell!” We decided to spread our own message so here are a few pictures of some of our members getting the word out.
