Volunteer Information

» Thank you very much for volunteering at our 8th Annual UCI Pow Wow this weekend! The American Indian Student Association is one of the smallest organizations on campus and the pow wow is our largest event of the year. Thank you for joining us in this very important celebration of our culture and heritage! This email is to provide you information on what to expect and what to avoid.

What to Expect

» When you arrive on the pow wow grounds on the corner of Campus Dr. and University Dr. please check in at the AISA Booth (keep in mind that if you are coming early on Saturday, you may be helping to set up the AISA Booth, but it will be easy to find us) You may have an assignment or you may be a "runner" which means we will need you for misc. tasks that come up during the day. If that is the case, please stay close to the AISA Booth during your scheduled volunteer hours so we can find you.

Some Guidelines to Keep in Mind

  • You are representing the pow wow, so be polite to everyone you come into contact with, even if they are upset/confused
  • If you cannot answer a question, ask another volunteer. If it is an urgent matter, contact the Earl Neconie (MC), Cheyenne Reynoso (AISA President), or Nikishna Polequaptewa (American Indian Resource Program Director)
  • During Grand Entry and the prayer that follows, it is customary to stand as a sign of respect. Please do so if you are not specifically working on something. Grand Entry will be at 1:00 and 8:00 on Saturday and 1:00 on Sunday
  • DO NOT walk across the pow wow circle
  • DO NOT touch dancers' regalia without their permission, especially their feathers or hair
  • DO NOT take pictures of any dancers or ceremonies without permission
  • In general, try to be open-minded and respectful. If you are unsure about something, ask

Possible Tasks that you may be asked to do

  • Set-up/Clean-up
  • Head Staff Hospitality & Food
  • AISA Booth (general information, volunteer check-in, programs, AISA information, raffle tickets, t-shirts)
  • AISA Drink Booth (selling drinks, re-stocking)
  • Sell raffle tickets or cake walk plates (walk around the pow wow selling tickets/plates to people
  • Facilities (trash, re-stocking porta-potties, etc.)
  • American Indian Graduation Ceremony on Saturday (check-in table, directing attendees, answering questions, helping set up the chairs, stage, sashes, and microphones)
  • American Indian Alumni Association Reception on Sunday (set-up, check-in, direction attendees, answering questions)
  • Misc. "on call" sometimes there will be things that come up (i.e. buying more water if we run out, making signs, etc.), so there's a need for people who are just there hanging out at the pow wow that can do random things as they come up
  • If you would like, you can also donate cakes for the cake walk

Again, we greatly appreciate your time and energy during the pow wow. If you have any questions or are unable to make it, please contact myself at this email address or (949) 824-0291. If I do not answer, please leave a message, as I will be coordinating various aspects of the powwow from now until then. Below is the rest of my contact information as wel as a general schedule of the pow wow. Please forward this email to anyone who may have not received it.
