Course Requirements:
To receive transcript credit for this course you must attend 80% of the lectures. A sign-in sheet will be available at the start of each class to record attendance. Students are expected to complete evaluation forms to provide feedback for the course director and student coordinators.
Course Reading:
A course reader will be provided and supplemental articles will be distributed as available.
Course Description:
The Business and Health Policy elective is a dynamic speaker series with presenters from a wide variety of academic and medical backgrounds. Students participating in the Business and Health Policy elective will gain an appreciation and understanding of:
— The history of Health care in the United States
— The relationship between business and medicine in the US
— Interpreting basic research findings in the field of health policy
— An understanding of mainstream Health Care reform options
— How to assess a health care system with examples of other systems
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in discussions of course material and will learn comfort in debating and discussing health policy in a productive and respectful way. The course is meant to serve as a foundation for physicians to gain a broad understanding of the system in which they practice.
