More information like rides and meet up time will come once we get closer to the event.

Week 4

Fansubbing Session

When: Apr. 25, 7:00pm
Where: PCB 1300

This workshop is designed to provide a brief overview of the fansubbing process and to familiarize those interested in some common tools used by fansubbers.

The following items will be REQUIRED at the workshop:
1) A reasonably powerful laptop computer (a netbook probably won't work), preferably Windows based, but Macintosh will work as well. Your laptop must have a functional USB port.
2) Headphones. These are necessary for you to time the subs correctly without disturbing your neighbors.

The following items are not required, but would help you along:
1) An external mouse
2) Your laptop’s power cord (Unless you can get 4+ hours of high performance out of your computer, you’ll want to make sure you have it with you)

The sample video we will be subbing for the workshop will be the first episode of Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki. I will be providing the 480p raw. I realize that not all of you probably know enough Japanese to translate, so I will also be providing the translated text as well.

The main program we will be using to prepare the subs will be Aegisub. I will also be providing both Windows and Macintosh versions of this program. Please note that the Macintosh version is still in alpha, so it may be unstable. (Using the application works fine, but quitting the program can cause instability on some Macs)

To create the final video file, we will be using mkvtoolnix (a.k.a. mkvmerge) for Windows and Macintosh machines.

To play the videos properly on Windows machines, I suggest installing the latest Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) with Media Player Classic-Home Cinema. This may be found online, but I will also provide the installer files. For those interested in playing Hi10p releases, you can try using MPC-HC with madVR and LAV instead of CCCP.

For computers running Macintosh, you’ll want to use either Mplayer2 (Rob can help you get it installed) or the new version of VLC, VLC2.0, which has numerous performance fixes.
