Laura Minero, May 13th, 2019
Laura Patricia Minero is a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology department at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Pre-Doctoral Ford Fellow. As an undocumented, queer, muXer of color, Laura is passionate about examining how policy impacts undocumented immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities to identify how to better-serve these populations through more inclusive implementation of policy and distribution of services. As a 2019 Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Fellow in the Board on Children, Youth, and Families (Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education) with the National Academy of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering, Laura has been learning how scientific studies are utilized to influence and inform policy that ultimately impact the well-being of communities at the state, local and national level. Laura will share her personal narrative and journey on advocating with and for undocumented, LGBTQIA+ Latinx, and Spanish-Speaking populations in the academy, locally, clinically, statewide, and nationally. This discussion will also include sharing of knowledge and resources among participants to create a community of apoyo of other scholar-activism endeavors.
