Professor, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science
Professor (Joint Appointment), Biomedical Engineering
Professor (Joint Appointment), Chemistry

B.S. (Chem.), University of California-Berkeley, 1967
Ph.D. (Chem.), University of California-Berkeley, 1971

His research focuses on the materials science aspects of polymers and soft
materials, particularly on how they are used to impact nanotechnology. His
recent projects include nanoimprinting and nanopatterning using polymers;
biomedical, micro- and nano-devices fabricated from polymers; and
fracture, failure and toughening of polymers, composites, and
nanocomposites. Dr. Yee has experience in industry as well as academe. He
was a research scientist
at General Electric Research Lab, and served on the faculty of the
University of Michigan, where he held teaching, research as well as
administrative positions. Prior to coming to Irvine he was the Executive
Director of the Institute of Materials and Research Engineering (IMRE) in
Singapore. From 2004 to 2007 he was the Director of the California
Institute for Telecommunication and Information Technology (Calit2), UC
Irvine. He is listed in www.isihighlycited.com as one of the most highly
cited materials scientists. He is a fellow of the American Physical
Society and of the Polymers, Materials Science and Engineering Division of
the
American Chemical Society. In 1994 he won the Japan 94 Award of the

Week 8- Fourth General Meeting
Guest Speaker: Ali Reza from Exponent
Day: Wednesday
Time: 6-7pm
Location: EH 2430, Colloquia Room

M.S., Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University, 1987
B.S., Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Princeton University, 1986

Mr. Reza specializes in the engineering investigation and prevention of
industrial, commercial, and residential fires and explosions. He studies
the origin, cause, and propagation of fires and explosions, particularly
in relation to the ignition, flame propagation, chemical kinetics, heat
transfer, and fluid mechanics processes associated with combustion and
explosion events. He has expertise in evaluating the hazards of reactive
chemicals and the conditions that might cause a runaway chemical reaction,
vapor cloud explosion, or detonation. Mr. Reza has conducted design and
performance reviews of a wide range of commercial and consumer equipment
and appliances and is experienced in evaluating site-specific procedures,
including engineering and regulatory controls designed to mitigate or
prevent such events. He has conducted extensive analytical, experimental,
and risk based studies to assess the risk of fires and explosions and
determine the effectiveness and durability of proposed fire retardants or
extinguishing media.
