Physicians: Would you like to Volunteer
with MIAH?
October

2011 -
Medical
Initiative
Against Homeless (MIAH), a UCI SOM student-run outreach
organization, would like to extend an invitation to join us as we work
to meet the medical needs of the homeless and underserved. We are
excited to announce a brand new collaboration with Illumination
Foundation (IF) and Kaiser Permanente to run a mobile medical clinic
once a month to provide care and treatment to the homeless and
uninsured. But we cannot do it without your help! We are recruiting
attending physicians from UCI to come out and act as preceptors to our
medical student volunteers, just one evening a month, with no
month-to-month commitment.
Some details about the mobile clinic:
- What?
MIAH/IF/Kaiser’s Mobile Medical Clinic.
- Where?
Located near Downtown Santa Ana
- When?
Every 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 8:30pm
- What
is
my role? Seeing underserved patients and teaching first and
second year students
- What
is
the commitment? No commitment necessary
- Who
else
will be there? You will be working alongside one Kaiser
attending and a variable number of residents, along with medical
students.
If
you would like more information about this opportunity, please fill
out our Interest Form by clicking

Thank you so much for your time, and we encourage you to contact us at

New Membership Changes
September

2011
-
First of all, thank you for your contributions to MIAH and your service
to our community. MIAH began as a small medical school organization
four years ago, and now has grown to embody various graduate and
undergraduate classes unified for a single cause--so thank you for your
help!
MIAH is now going through significant changes regarding
membership, and if you would like to continue being a MIAH volunteer
please continue reading.
As of August 2011, we will erase all volunteer information from our
database and start from scratch. This is solely because we need to
make sure all MIAH volunteers are insured, fingerprinted, and oriented
when dealing with the homeless population and patients. For instance,
in case a child or patient gets hurt during a MIAH event, we need to
have all volunteers insured and have a proper protocol in place.
How do I continue
being a part of MIAH? In order to become a MIAH volunteer again,
you will need to attend the New Member Orientation held on Friday,
September 30th (time and location TBA). At the orientation, we'll
discuss how to sign up for MIAH, volunteer commitments, and how to get
your fingers printed (Live Scan) at a local police station ($10 to
$20). By doing this, we hope to have all members insured at events, be
a more organized club, track all volunteer hours, and have a more
tight-knit organization. Please go to our FAQs section for step-by-step instructions.
Again, mark your calendars to stay with MIAH!
