We understand that it's hard to balance school work and community outreach, so the MIAH officers would like to thank ALL of our volunteers for your hard work! We'd like to specially thank the following volunteers for going above and beyond in their respective committees:

1. Kevin Phan (S.H.O. Committeee) - Kevin is a dedicated leader and a great example in the SHO health classes. He is the coordinator for the patient education classes and makes sure the courses run smoothly every week through his attendance and coordination. Congrats Kevin and we look forward to more of your awesome efforts!
2. Julius Bolus and Leah Guerrero (Recuperative Care) - Both have taught almost every Recuperative Program patient education class offered this spring. They are ever diligent and take everything and everyone in the most positive light possible. Thank you for your fine work, Julius and Leah!
3. Zauhra Nazery (Community Resource Committee) - Zauhra Nazery is our volunteer of the quarter who created most of the new educational  pamphlets.  Our resources would not be complete with out her hard work!

Input for CMMI Motel?
February 25, 2011 - Here is an exciting opportunity to get involved NOW!!

We feel that MIAH could surely have valuable input and suggestions for the set up and structuring of the room and supplies. This week will be dedicated to moving around the materials and furniture and creating an efficient workspace that is beneficial for the children and volunteers. If any members are interested in being a part of the process this week, please contact Yvette Ahlstrom, the Costa Mesa Site Coordinator.

October Committee Updates!
Oct. 5, 2010 - (To learn more about each committee click here)

Health Classes: The 2 month diabetes course at the Costa Mesa Motor Inn has been going great!  15 people originally enrolled in the class and attendance has remained high. More health classes at Valencia Inn and CMMI are scheduled for 2 weeks from now.

Recuperative Program: Training sessions are underway to go over interviewing, vitals, and to make sure the medical specialists (that's what they are going to call the volunteers) are ready.  In a couple of weeks we will hold a CPR training class with IF.

Tutoring: The kids just can't get enough of us!  They LOVE tutoring and are waiting at the door every time.  Thursday sessions have had upwards of 20 kids at several sessions!  That said, WE NEED MORE TUTORS.  The tutoring sessions are the most successful when we have a one to one ratio and it is always our goal to achieve this.  So please think about joining us on any Thursday and every other Sunday (see online calendar for dates).

Fit 4 Life: So far this Fall, Fit 4 Life has been gaining more volunteers and interest on a weekly basis.  We are looking to get some new projects going, but for the most part, simply increasing the turnout of kids and volunteer interest is our main concern.

Science Projects: Every other Thursday tutoring ends with a science project and the kids can't wait to finish their homework so they can participate!  Some of the projects we have done in the past include Glow in the Dark, Acid/Base Balloon, Vinegar Volcanoes, Build-your-own Solar System, and Electric Motors.

Mobile Clinic: The mobile clinic has brand new projects in need of volunteers. First off, we started a new patient education program at the clinic. Medical students volunteer to speak to patients about their medical conditions as well as overall health maintenance.  Other projects include providing hygiene kits (toothpaste, soap, etc.) and resource guides (information on local shelters and food banks) to the patients at our clinic. We are also in the works of creating our very own women's health clinic as an addition to the current clinic. We are in the process of collecting materials and could really use your help. If you would like to get involved, please email sdeangel@uci.edu.

Food and Nutrition: We have had several healthy snack lessons with the kids following tutoring and they have been a great success! The kids truly enjoy healthy food. The Food and Nutrition committee will put on a diabetic cooking class on Monday November 8 at the Costa Mesa Motor Inn. The goal of the class is to educate the residents about how to prepare low-cost meals that address nutritional needs specific to diabetics.

Spring 2010

Patient Education

May 30, 2010 - MIAH held its first workshop for those interested in patient education  There will be 2 patient educators per clinic day to talk about diabetes, high blood pressure, oral health, mental health, hyperlipidemia and other pertinent conditions to our community.
