International Service | Christmas Train in Tecate, Mexico |
|
Rotaractors of UC Irvine traveled to the California-Mexico border in San Diego and met up with Rotarians and other Rotaractors. As a unit, they crossed the border into Tecate, Mexico. They then took a bus into a stadium full of families with young children. They were cheering as they were ready to receive gifts to celebrate Dia De Los Reyes, the day the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. On the stadium floor, many volunteers unloaded boxes full of toys, learning supplies, clothes, and hygenic items. Before the gifts were distributed, a small ceremony took place in which the Three Kings entered the stadium on horses and camels. After the ceremony, each king was put at a distribution station where families lined up ready to receive their gifts.
UC Irvine Rotaractors, along with a king, helped distribute to families. UCI Rotaractors enjoyed giving infant necessities, such as diapers, clothing, and blankets, to the families that need them. Other members where stationed elsewhere where they were responsible for giving out hygenic items such as tootbrushes and toothpaste. This event was a great opportunity for Rotaractors to engage in international service. It was a humbling experience that helped members realize some of the necessities, such as toothbrushes and clothing, that people sometimes take for granted. Rotaract UCI gives thanks to all the people that participated in this event, and a great thanks to those that planned everything to make this trip possible. Look out for this event next year!

Skid Row with Helping Hearts for the Homeless | 11.19.2011 |
|
Rotaract UCI teamed up with Helping Hearts for the Homeless and made a trip to Skid Row in LA to deliver care packages, food, and clothing to those less fortunate. Both clubs met up early in the morning to make and pack sandwiches and other foods. The term "Skid Row" refers to a run-down or dilapidated urban area with a large, impoverished population, and it was tough to see a large number of people suffering in bad living conditions with limited access to food, water, and warm clothing. Distributing the goods to the people on Skid Row was an eye-opening experience for many members. This was a good service event that exhibited a lot of selflessnes, and both Rotaract and Helping Hearts for the Homeless hope to inspire others to serve and help those that are less fortunate.
To learn about more service opportunities, keep up with Rotaract UCI's website and/or attend winter quarter meetings Wednesdays 6-7pm in the Student Center, Emerald Bay DE. To learn more about opportunities to help with Helping Hearts for the Homeless, click here.

Rotaract Supports EPIC INTERNATIONAL |

The EPIC Story
In July of 2010, Jeff and Jackie Bird traveled to Haiti to help with the relief effort. It had been almost six months since the 7.0 earthquake hit, yet the country remained in a desperate state. The Haitians who had survived the earthquake were now displaced and contending with a lack of clean water, food and medical aid.
Jeff and Jackie returned home with a passion to empower everyday people like themselves to impact the lives of those in need. They immediately laid the groundwork for Epic International, a company with philanthropy at its core. For every Epic watch that our customers purchase, Epic will provide the resources needed to generate clean drinking water for an individual in a developing country for one year.
Approximately every 19 seconds a child dies from a water-borne disease. 1 out of 8 people in the world do not have access to clean water. Together we can change this! For every Epic timepiece that you purchase, Epic will provide clean water to someone in a developing country for an entire year through the distribution of water filters.
Support from Rotaract at UCI
As a club, Rotaract has taken great interest in EPIC and is helping Jackie sell as many watches by the end of the year. One of Rotaract's main objectives is to help serve at an international level, and helping Jackie is allowing them and others to really make a difference in someone's life.
If you are interested in purchasing a timepiece, you may contact any one of the board members. Click here for contact information. A few timepieces have already been purchased by Rotaractors, and the watches themselves are very appealing and high quality. They would make a perfect Christmas gift because not only will you be making someone close to you happy, you will also be making someone else happy by providing them with clean water which is not accessible to them because of the conditions they live in.
You may also purchase a timepiece by going to the EPIC website at http://www.epictimepieces.com/
If purchasing online, you may use the Coupon Code: "UCI" to receive a $15 discount!
Also, if you are interested, check out their video on YouTube, which explains more about The EPIC Movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyI4Tt6irp4

Special Olympics: Floor Hockey |
|

Rotaract of UC Irvine spent their Saturday at 949 Roller Hockey Center for the Special Olympics Floor Hockey Competition. Throughout the afternoon tournament, they helped keep score, record statistics, and cheered on the teams. The games were full of excitement and incredible athletes, and Rotaract was there to witness greatness. The athletes showed great sportsmanship and they even gave thanks to some Rotaractors by exchanging hugs and high fives. Overall, it was a great community service event and definitely an event Rotaract will consider doing in the future.

***A big thanks to the Rotaract Community Service Director, Sarah Chan, for planning this event for the members. She even woke up early in the morning at 5am to take a 4 mile run to the 949 Roller Hockey Center and help set up for the event. Thanks Sarah for exemplifying what it means to have a Passion for Action! |
